Most of us have ran in some kind of run that gives you a little goody bag full of useless junk, until I ran Devour Des Moines.
Devour Des Moines
For the first time, last summer, I ran in the great Devour Des Moines race in downtown Des Moines. I remember when the first race was held. I really wanted to run, and eat in it, but I wasn’t able to find anybody who could stomach it [literally]. Devour Des Moines is a race that is held every fall.
Devour Des Moines teams are made up of four people. I was invited to participate and write a blog post about it [here]. So, I joined a group of random people and we got to training. No, we didn’t train for the miles, we had to get our STOMACHS in shape. The race is constructed in a relay format. Each leg consisted of one eating and one athletic event.
Here was last year’s Devour Des Moines race:
1st Leg: Team Member 1 eats an order of pizza puffs and runs 2 miles
2nd Leg: Team Member 2 eats a half pound of Mo’Rub wings and competes in a water challenge.
3rd Leg: Team member 3 eats 2 pork shanks and runs 2 miles.
4th Leg: Team member 4 shucks and eats an ear of corn and bikes 5 miles.
5th Leg: The whole team is back together to devour a dessert and run a final lap
It was brutal, but a very beautiful day!
The Goody Bag
Most of us have ran in some kind of run that gives you a little goodie bag full of useless junk, until I ran Devour Des Moines. We got the standard t-shirts and things but what was also inside was this nifty pocket-knife like culinary set. It has a knife, fork, spoon, can opener, and a wine bottle opener. I remember thinking how cool that was but when was I going to use this other than to open some bottles of wine, and maybe to pop open a beer, or cut a package open?
Put To Use
Just this spring, and early summer, I had remembered that I had these. My girlfriend and I go on all sorts of adventures from camping, to hiking to just going out and grilling somewhere other than our apartment’s parking lot/deck. They have come in use so much since our first camping and foodster adventure about a month ago.
We may or may not have spent like 15 minutes trying to open a can of beans with the Devour Des Moines can opener, but hey, we got it open with it regardless.
In case you were wondering, they also make great campfire roasters for marshmallows.
This is by far one of the most useful, and now one of my favorites gifts for running in a race. 🙂
