Maybe you’re lacking skill in the kitchen or instead of visiting the same restaurant again you’re looking for a unique night out.
As you know Des Moines has a lot of options but have you ever considered visiting one of the several cooking classes that are offered in the Des Moines metro area? Whether you live downtown or out in the suburbs there is a location that will suit your needs for learning how to cook from some of the best teachers in central Iowa.
This post covers four places to take a class in central Iowa. The owner/chef has given their own take on the atmosphere and the outcome of taking the their class.
Class begins…now! 🙂
1. Wooden Spoons Workshops and Cooking Classes
Who: Deb Cazavilan
Describe the culture/atmosphere of your class.
Well, for the past year we’ve been in our new digs. It’s in my home now. I built a state of the art home kitchen with a 12′ by 4 ‘ island that doubles as my dining room table. The atmosphere is warm, and relaxed. People feel at ease in the home atmosphere. It’s very social and interactive. I encourage my students to share with each other. Many participants have become great friends outside of class. They’ll often attend one of my classes together.
What do you hope your guests get out of attending your class?
Empowerment.
I love to hear back from them, which I often do. I hear how much they enjoyed making a dish they learned and how their family enjoys the fruit of their labor! I never hold back secret formulas in my class. Anything they are tasting or experiencing in class, they are getting the recipes to take home. I want my students to truly feel they got their money’s worth and more. Also, I want them to leave with their bellies and hearts equally full. It’s so much more natural to have that happen in my home, than in a rented storefront.

2. Country Club Market
Who: Terrie Kohl, Owner/Instructor/Personal Chef
What inspired you to start your cooking classes?
My love of food and empowering those interested in the culinary arts to be creative in their own kitchens. My saying is “Eating In is the New Dining Out.” Whether classes, personal chef or customized catering…your fears will be diminished.
Describe the culture/atmosphere of your class.
I make sure that my attendees get over the fear of ingredients, timing a dish just right and I make sure they get to experience new recipes. They will be able to carry over the recipes for family and entertaining. My classes always provide a fun night out with old and new friends.
Thanks Chef Terrie for another great meal tonight!! #dsm #cooking #chef A photo posted by Des Moines Foodster (@dmfoodster) on

3. Nonna’s Inspired Cooking
Who: Stacey
What inspired you to start your cooking classes?
After teaching my sister how to cook I found it very rewarding to see her excitement as she tried new recipes and techniques; driving me to share my passion with others.
Describe the culture/atmosphere of your class.
My classes are taught as in home parties so the atmosphere is fun and entertaining. People are more engaged and interactive when surrounded by their own friends and family.
What do you hope your guests get out of attending your class?
I hope that guests feel the recipes are simple and practical enough that they feel comfortable making the recipes at home for their families.

4. Cooking Classes At The Culinary Loft
Who: Amanda Mae Phillips, Culinary Arts Director
What inspired you to start your cooking classes?
The Des Moines Social Club always knew they wanted to put in a kitchen in their Art Deco Firehouse home. It was only with the generous support of Cathy and Steve Lacy that we were able to see that goal realized. We offer a full Culinary Arts program, which complements the rest of the arts we offer here.
Describe the culture/atmosphere of your class.
From hands on to demonstrations, from celebration to team builds- we offer a space to let down your fear of the kitchen and get messy! Without all the clean-up.
What do you hope your guests get out of attending your class?
Learn the theory of food and cooking- not just how to follow a recipe!
