Ice fishing is one of my most favorite hobbies in the winter. Sometimes I actually prefer it over fishing in the summer. There’s definitely a rush when you first drive out on to the ice and drill your first hole – only to find no fish on the Vexilar though.
It was my first time visiting Lake Thompson in South Dakota.
Now, we visited Clear Lake first to get our ice house but that gives you an idea of where Lake Thompson is. It’s know for having outstanding fishing. My brother and Dad have first hand experience of catching fish faster than they could reel them in. So, I was pretty excited to check out the fishing.
It was a slow day at first, so I played Foodster in our “Lil’ Stinker”.
Yeah, that’s the real name of the ice house from Ice Castle brand. We didn’t name it ourselves.
Brats and mac n’ cheese was on the menu in the ice house.
Manning the ‘kitchen’.
Then finally after waiting all-day, we finally started to get some bites.
The first fish was off of the tip-up which was really exciting because after years of using it we finally caught one on it!
Then, they starting biting on our lines in the ice house.
A couple of walleye.
And a crappie.
That wrapped up our first day and night of fishing. The stars were amazing.
The next morning we didn’t catch fish right away but we caught one hell of a sunrise.
We had a couple fish on the last morning. One landed and a couple fell off the hook before we could ‘land’ them.
The best part of the trip was coming home and cooking the fish right away. Eat fishing less than 10 hours out of the water makes from one great meal.
I absolutely love using Louisiana New Orleans Fish Fry coating. It’s so flavorful and your fish doesn’t come out of the pan dripping grease like other batters might do. I don’t even need lemon pepper or fresh lemon when I’m eating my fillets.
Best part was that Anna got to enjoy the catch. 🙂
